Product Description:
CAS 55-56-1 is a broad-spectrum antiseptic and disinfectant that presents as a white or almost white crystalline powder and is essentially odorless. It is a bisbiguanide compound widely recognized for its potent antimicrobial activity against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some fungi and viruses.
Chlorhexidine works by binding to the negatively charged cell walls of microorganisms, disrupting their cell membranes and causing leakage of intracellular components, ultimately leading to cell death. Its sustained action and ability to bind to skin and mucous membranes (substantivity) make it particularly effective for long-lasting antimicrobial effects. It is commonly formulated as various salts, such as chlorhexidine gluconate or chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, to enhance solubility and stability for different applications.
Applications:
Medical & Hospital Disinfectant: Extensively used in hospitals and healthcare settings for skin preparation prior to surgery or injections, wound disinfection, and hand sanitization (surgical scrubs and hand rubs).
Oral Hygiene: A key active ingredient in many antiseptic mouthwashes to control plaque, gingivitis, and oral infections.
Veterinary Medicine: Employed as an antiseptic and disinfectant for skin, wounds, and oral care in animals.
Pharmaceuticals: Used in various topical antiseptic preparations, creams, and gels for skin and wound care.
Preservative: Can be used as a preservative in some cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations due to its antimicrobial properties.
