Aluminum fluoride is mainly used in aluminum smelting to reduce melting point and improve electrolyte conductivity. An inhibitor used in the production of alcohol as a byproduct of fermentation. Also used as a flux and a component of enamels for ceramic and enamels. It can also be used as a flux for smelting non-ferrous metals.
